Position : Environment Technician – Rehabilitation
This role will assist in the development and implementation of scientifically sound technologies and procedures for the effective management and conservation of biodiversity and rehabilitation of disturbed land to an agreed planned post-closure use.
Key responsibilities will include :
•Monitor areas of disturbance, topsoil and vegetation stripping, revegetation/rehabilitation, tree planting programs and enter data into the rehabilitation database.
•Effectively maintain SMI’s mine rehabilitation GIS database.
•Liaise with community representatives with respect to land management/land care issues on SMI managed lands.
•Assist in the gathering of quality and timely baseline flora and fauna assessment data as component of the feasibility study.
•Assist in the refinement of procedures for the effective management and conservation of biodiversity and rehabilitation of disturbed land to a planned post-closure use.
Key requirements :
•Bachelor’s degree in Environment, Agriculture or Civil Engineering
•1 – 2 years experience in rehabilitation of disturbed lands
•Background in road rehabilitation is an advantage
•Physically able to work in difficult terrain and remote locations
•Competent, flexible and willing to be assigned in the field
•Good communication skills
